Praised both by critics and gamers, the latest instalment of the Total War series takes strategy enthusiasts back to 16th-century Japan and presents a lavish blend of 3D real-time battles and turn-based management.

Put all the benchmarks together and you begin to see that HD 7870 performance can be up and down. In some titles it's better than a GeForce GTX 580, in others it bests a Radeon HD 7950, and in one game it's worse than GeForce GTX 570.

The fluctuating performance is a sign of driver immaturity, but the Radeon HD 7870's baseline performance is strong, and will no doubt improve following pending driver advancements.

In Total War: Shogun 2, the PowerColor and Gigabyte cards are quicker than reference by about six per cent, but the two have thus far been tough to separate. Let's now take a look at power consumption, temperature and noise.
