Power consumption

It's sure nice to have a 10 per cent bump in gaming performance that's made possible by increasing frequencies. The downside is that the GTX 590 pulls a great number of watts - and that's without increase the GPUs' voltage.

Increasing frequencies by 10 per cent leads to a 40W power-draw hike. Pragmatically, this may well be the main reason why NVIDIA chose lower clocks and, consequently, a lesser power-draw figure.
