The maturity of both CrossFireX and SLI technologies is plain to see. The GeForce GTX 285 in particular shows that in certain scenarios a performance increase of over 90 per cent can be had when a second GPU is added to the mix.

If you're in the market for a multi-GPU setup, though, expense isn't likely to be a limiting factor and there's no quicker multi-GPU configuration of single-GPU cards than the Radeon HD 5870s in CrossFireX. For the modest reader, it's worth noting that a handful of our lesser benchmarked cards offer perfectly playable framerates at 2,560x1,600 - the Radeon HD 4890 OC, priced at around £170, being a prime example.
