Benchmarks: Core
Our PiFast benchmark remains a great tool for testing single-core speed, and the Core i7-4790K's top frequency of 4.4GHz plays well here. It's the fastest default-clocked chip we've tested.
Intel's popularising the fact this chip is the first to run all cores at 4GHz. Eight threads humming along at that speed give it best-in-class performance, some 10 per cent faster than the Core i7-4770K. The Devil's Canyon score would only be eclipsed by Intel processors imbued with six cores and 12 threads - Sandy Bridge-E and Ivy Bridge-E, for example.
And wPrime further reinforces the notion that this quad-core, eight-thread chip is mighty fast when running at full pelt. We're looking at a consistent 10 per cent improvement over the Core i7-4770K, which is to be expected given the increase in base and Turbo frequencies.
