Value and Effiency
A quick word on value and energy efficiency, neither of which ought to be at the top of the 2990WX's attribute list.
We can calculate relative value by looking at the all-core-aware Cinebench score and then dividing that result by the cost of each processor at Newegg (US dollars). Though the 2990WX's performance is way, way better than every other processor, the $1,799 price counts against it somewhat.
One wouldn't expect AMD to sell its premium HEDT cheaply, and what's of more importance here is that the 2.88 score is higher than the Core i9-7980XE's.
We can also divide the same score by the TDP as quoted by the manufacturer. One can argue that Intel and AMD don't match up in the real world - one guy's 150W is not another's - though it's clear that going incredibly dense in the socket leads to best-in-class energy efficiency.
Now if only AMD contemplated a 2P Threadripper 2 system...
