wPrime and Cinebench
These two multi-threaded tests show the direct benefit of more cores and threads whilst keeping frequencies similar across generations. Taking Cinebench as the test case, the Core i7-8700K is 53 per cent faster than the Core i7-7700K that it effectively replaces in the mainstream pecking order. This uplift gives it enough horsepower to match the 8C/16T Ryzen 7 1700.
Switching chips, the Core i5-8400's comparative performance receives an even bigger boost. It is more than twice as fast as the price-comparable Core i3-7350K, and puts more than 20 per cent into the Ryzen 5 1500X. Already looking like a star performer, isn't it?
