The performance benchmarks on the previous pages tell part of the story, but it is also interesting to see how CPUs compare once value and power efficiency are put into the equation.

We have taken both single- and multi-threaded applications in the form of PiFast and Cinebench and then calculated how the CPUs line up once launch price is factored in. We also graph up single- and multi-threaded relative performance with the TDP factored in, hence a bang4watt for both workloads.

Core i5-8400 is relatively cheap but also pretty fast, which is the perfect combination for the PiFast bang4buck. Core i7-8700K is no better than the Core i7-7700K because its slightly faster time is cancelled by the slightly higher price.

AMD has previously owned the Cinebench bang4buck graph due to the Ryzens' ability to achieve a heady mix of excellent performance and economical price. Shoving more cores and keeping pricing roughly the same does wonders for the 8th Gen CPUs, as well, so much so that the Core i5-8400 takes top spot. It's like getting 7700K-beating performance at half its price. Core i7-8700K also does pretty well here.
