The software used within this test is the latest release of XFree86 4.0.1, and the NVIDIA 0.9-4 drivers, and to finish it off kernel 2.2.16. With XFree86 4.x came the ability to do direct rendering in user space - this in simple terms means that you need not jump to superuser (root) just to do something 3D. It also brought DRI - Direct Rendering Infrastructure. This is a system and specification produced by Precision Insight to allow for 3D rendering under the X Windowing System. Unfortunately NVIDIA decided to break the mould and do direct rendering their own way, this is bad because it encourages other manufacturers to do the same thing, but on the other hand NVIDIA's drivers are so good it makes no difference. NVIDIA have been very clever with their drivers - 90% of the drivers are the same as the ones running under windows - so any enhancements to the drivers affects both windows and Linux. This is very very good. It also means that you can expect almost identical performance from you graphics card under Linux as you get under windows. (Currently they are not exactly the same - but the small gap gets smaller and smaller every release). The drivers are also very easy to install, needing only a few commands to get it up and running.
