The news

LaCie is replacing its d2 family of external SATA hard drives with SATA II models aimed at anyone wanting a fast but cheap alternative to fibre channel or SCSI, though with video-editors prime candidates. Three models are available - 250GB (SRP, £109 inc VAT); 320GB (£149); and 500GB (£219) and those prices are £20 less than equivalents in LaCie's well known d2 triple-interface (USB 2.0, FireWire 800, FireWire 400) range.

The eSATA II boxes have 7200rpm/16MB-cache drives within and their nominal interface throughput speed is 3Gbit/sec (300MB/s). That's twice the rate of  first-generation SATA, though LaCie puts the maximum sustained data rate at a more realistic 85MB/s.

d2 drives are said to be hot-pluggable and bootable on Windows and Mac OS X, and able to deliver extra speed by striping them together in software RAID.

The company's own backup software is included with each model and said to provide a fast and "cost-effective" back-up solution.
