AOL and Yahoo! are to start charging for sending emails.

Both companies will still accept free emails but are offering the chance to pay to avoid their spam filters. By paying between a quarter and one cent per message companies will get preferential delivery of their messages.

So a "business class" email will go straight to an AOL-subscriber's inbox marked with a stamp saying "AOL Certified Email" while a free email will have to run the gamut of AOL spam filters. Free mails may also have images and web links removed.

Companies must adhere to a code of practise to send "business class" mail, and AOL and Yahoo say the system will help them reduce spam and phishing attacks.

The two internet giants are working with Goodmail on the project - Yahoo has yet to decide how it will route paid-for emails.

The news comes as the US Sentate meets to discuss issues raised by a "two-tier" internet - the Commerce Committee is meeting this week. More from the New York Times, if you're registered, here. ®

Only thing I'm concerned is how will my email be filtered…

i.e. If I send a email to myself from school, with a couple of pictures(coursework) attached, with no body text and a rather plain subject will it got filtered?

I admit there are hell lots of spam mail out there, I “only” get like 5 spam a day and my outlook's filter couldn't do anything to stop them… A weak filter is not gonna do anything but one which is too strong will affect legal (and actually important to individuals') emails
Its a great idea but has huge wide reaching implications and there is no guarentee this will help reduce spam i'm afraid.

The real problem as I see it is persuading senders to pay. You would have to send a lot of emails to AOL or Yahoo addresses to make this worthwhile - and the only realistic reason that you would do that is if you are a spammer!

It only makes financial sense for contacting employees or clients urgently, and it would make more sense to give employees off-site access to corporate email accounts if necessary, and clients should be expected to pay for it themselves if they want the convenience of a yahoo or aol account ;)

The equivalent situation with mobile phones (initial high cost of calling them from a landline) was overcome because there was no other way of contacting someone on the move. The trouble is, there are loads of other email providers out there that people can use, so why should I pay to send email to aol?

Nah this sucks….

you knwo why….. because your ISP gives you free everything with your Net account-

i kinda hate the idea because that means the amount of people who will leave them 2 services is Barberic because u have to pay for spam filters……and lets face it…

why woudl u have a account that doesnt have a Spam filter- i would suggest Hotmail and other free webmail services advertise free everything with their stuff ;)

i think the only way where gonna get rid of spam is just Ignore it like letetrs u get through the post… ;)
