Defrosted
It's day 2 of Google's I/O developer fest and, while we're waiting for it to launch Google TV - an IPTV collaboration with Intel, Sony and Logitech - there's already been a big announcement: the unveiling of Android 2.2, codenamed Froyo, which is short for frozen yoghurt.
The big upgrade with Froyo seems to be speed, with Google claiming a 2-5x performance increase in CPU-bound code over Android 2.1 (Éclair). There's also a claimed 2-3x increase in Javascript performance, which will benefit the speed of web browsing.
Other highlighted improvements include improvements to its communication with Microsoft Exchange, such as calendar sync, and improvements in remote security. There's also extra help for app developers, with a new end-user bug reporting feature.
"This seventh update to the Android platform brings some great new functionality to users (things like making your handset a portable hotspot and support for Adobe Flash within the browser), along with new tools for developers," said Google engineering VP Andy Rubin in a blog post.
Here's the customary Google vid highlighting some new features of Android 2.2. You can see all of them on the developer site here.
