New middleware and applications allow consumers to share multimedia content across a home network to the television

MARKHAM, Ontario - May 20, 2003 - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSX:ATY,
NASDAQ:ATYT) today at Mediacast 2003 in London, United Kingdom, unveiled the result of its collaboration, built around ATI's XILLEON(tm), with Oregan Networks Ltd. to provide a Set Top Box (STB) reference platform for digital broadcasting, IP television and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Home Media Networking markets.

XILLEON is an advanced and highly integrated system-on-chip suitable for a range of digital devices including STBs and digital televisions (DTVs).

The platform is designed to allow consumers to share and view digital media content from a variety of network-connected devices as part of an integrated home entertainment experience. The Oregan middleware stack complies with the emerging UPnP standard, spearheaded by Intel Corp. and adopted by leading consumer electronics and PC manufacturers. This enables fully automatic discovery and presentation of content and services on any UPnP-enabled device within a home network. Regardless of whether the content is stored on an UPnP-enabled PC, digital video recorder, MP3 player or other consumer electronics device, the technology permits remote access, presentation and control of that content from any other UPnP enabled client within the home.

Targeted at the worldwide digital broadcast market, the reference design provides build configuration options for DVB-T (6, 7, and 8MHz), ATSC and QAM (J.83B) digital tuners within an STB or integrated DTV. The specification also features Ethernet or Wireless Ethernet options for provision of an interactive services backchannel and enabling interconnectivity within a home network.

The middleware and application software from Oregan Networks allows TV tuner and PVR functions to be controlled from an HTML and Macromedia Flash user interface, whilst also offering integral support for IP multicast and VOD services delivered by leading video server solutions supporting the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP).

The hardware is built around the ATI XILLEON, which integrates into a single chip all processor, graphics, video, audio, and I/O (input and output) capabilities needed in a STB or digital TV. Included are a 300 MHz MIPS® CPU (central processing unit), dual SD (standard definition) or dual-HD (high
definition) capable MPEG decoder, audio decoder, dual display engine, 2D and 3D graphics engine, conditional access, transport demultiplexers, PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect), USB (universal serial bus), and hard disk drive interfaces.

ATI and Oregan will demonstrate XILLEON and the Oregan middleware solutions at Mediacast 2003, booth E8 May 20-22, 2003, at ExCel, London, UK.
