PRESS RELEASE

Stockton on Tees September 6th 2018 - Following the launch of the new Thunderbolt product portfolio, Lindy a global supplier of combined connectivity solutions and professional AV & IT systems is presenting a new Active Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station. With Thunderbolt 3’s 40Gbps data rate a single 5k, or two 60Hz 4k monitors, can be connected to the docking station. This device also provides gigabit ethernet and USB 3.1, as well as an active power supply up to 60W to charge any connected devices.

The focus is on users who want to combine the comfort of a high performance workstation with the flexibility of a laptop. In large company’s users often faced the choice of either using a classic manufacturer and model-specific docking station or a USB docking station. However, the latter in particular quickly reached their limits when it came to graphics. Dual 4K resolutions is impossible when using USB alone.  Thunderbolt 3 manages to create a scenario where it can provide a unified interface to quickly and flexibly upgrade mobile workstations into fully featured desktop devices. Whether at a workplace, conference room or in a home office, being able to create a feature      workspace experience with a simple “plug and play” set up is a flexibility that is not only convenient but is required in a modern work environment.

Connections at a glance: 2x Thunderbolt with power delivery, 5x USB, HDMI, Audio, Gigabit Ethernet and SD Reader

The docking station has two Thunderbolt 3 jacks. Both support an active power supply (power delivery) up to 60 watts. A notebook can be connected to the docking station via a socket and supplied with power by the docking station, the second port can then be used to directly connect a monitor with a Thunderbolt connection. Since the Thunderbolt 3 connector is identical to USB Type C, USB Type C equipment can also be connected to the second socket, for which 60W power supply is also available.

In addition to the two Thunderbolt ports, the docking station offers five additional USB 3.1 (type A) jacks, two on the front and three on the back, a 3.5mm jack for 2.1 audio/micro, an SD card reader and gigabit ethernet.

An additional HDMI port allows for the connection of a second monitor, if the first was connected directly via Thunderbolt.

Thunderbolt 3 for native graphics signals without processor loading

Thunderbolt 3 has taken a big step forward in becoming a more commonplace interface. With Thunderbolt, the goal is to transfer image, sound, data and power via a cable. With 40Gbps bandwidth native graphics signals can be routed through the Thunderbolt cable in parallel with data transfer. The computing power for the graphics is therefore not in the docking station but natively on the graphics card in the notebook instead.

To connect the monitors, the docking station features Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI ports. With the use of adaptors, it is possible to use conventional monitors with the Thunderbolt 3 port.

Docking Station offers active power supply with power delivery up to 60 watts

Currently, both USB Type C and Thunderbolt 3 support the Power Delivery Standard. With high voltages up to 20V and amperage up to 3A, the Lindy Docking station can deliver up to 60 watts of power to connected devices.

This power delivery means that the notebook/laptop connected to the docking station does not require its own power supply and can be charged via the docking station. In addition, the monitor connected to Thunderbolt can be supplied with power directly via the docking station alongside video & audio signals. Even the most power intensive USB Type C equipment can use the power delivery functionality of the second Thunderbolt port.

Technical Specifications

The docking station supports the full bandwidth of Thunderbolt 3 and uses the original Intel Alpine Ridge 4C chipset. Both Thunderbolt 3 ports on this device are bidirectional. Both the HDMI output (HDMI 2.0) and the Thunderbolt output are HDCP 2.2 compliant for the distribution of HDCP 2.2 signals. In addition to any audio signals embedded within the video signal, sound and micro can also be connected separately via a 4-segment 3.5mm jack port.

Power delivery 2.0 with a maximum of 60 watts is available for both Thunderbolt ports (chipset TI TPS65983A). One of the five USB ports also supports Battery Charging 1.2. All five USB ports (chipset: Fresco FL1100) support SuperSpeed (5Gbps) according to USB 3.1 Gen 1.

The docking station measures 155 x 85 x 23mm, has an aluminium/plastic housing and has a power consumption of 135 watts at full capacity.

The smaller alternative – Thunderbolt adapters for multi-monitoring

As an alternative to the full-featured docking station, Lindy offers two active dual-monitor adapters that are limited to the graphical capabilities of Thunderbolt 3. These are two adapters that output a Thunderbolt 3 signal to two DisplayPort or HDMI outputs. Both outputs support full 4K at 60Hz. As with the large docking station, alternatively only one monitor with 5K resolution can be connected. The power supply of these adapters is via the Thunderbolt interface.

Prices & Availability

The large ‘Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station’ (item number 43903) is now available for £399.97. In addition to the power supply, the package includes a Thunderbolt 3 cable for connection to a Thunderbolt device.
