Multiplayer frustration
Character animations have also taken a step up from the game’s previous outings and add to a more realistic experience. Character’s faces move naturally and add expression and depth to their appearance. Despite these positive comments, Quake IV doesn’t utilise the power of the Xbox 360, the graphics could have been better.
The sound of the game is the major high point of Quake IV; weapons vibrate, rattle, boom and reverberate around the Strogg territories. The sound of the earlier missions effectively re-create the feeling of an onslaught; planes roar overhead, crossfire echoes and canons explode in a cacophony of noise. The intro and cut-scenes blast out of your speakers with the digital precision that you’d expect from a movie blockbuster.
The multiplayer aspect of Quake IV falls short of what might be expected. Perhaps I haven’t quite got the knack but it seems to take forever to take an opponent down, this could of course be down to the fact that my aiming isn’t the best. , There are four game modes, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and 1 Vs 1 tournament mode. A rather limited selection means that there are other FPS out there that will give you more variety – the online play left me feeling empty and desperate to jump onto a more exciting game.
On the plus side, at least the developers included a half-decent lobby system where players can chat before games.
Despite the feeling of déjà vu throughout Quake IV, it is still good fun in short bursts, or if you have never played a Quake game before. Fans of the series will be disappointed that Raven hasn’t built on the previous titles. The close resemblance to Doom 3 make the game feel slightly over familiar and the multiplayer action feels stale. However, Quake IV is still a good game. Take it for what it is, a standard action packed FPS, with decent weapons, relentless enemies and a worthwhile, if not exciting, gaming experience
