Conclusion
There are no competitive online multiplayer modes in Red River, such as team death-match, but there is Fireteam Engagements. This mode has instant pick-up-and-play appeal, tasking you with a number of campaign-style objectives, such as protecting a convoy from attack. These missions are much shorter and fast-paced then if you’re playing the campaign, so there's some replay value to be had and instant action if you just want to hop in and out of game without having to spend an hour or so getting through a campaign mission. The Operation Flashpoint games have never really been aimed at the mass market, focusing instead on a more realistic storyline and gameplay, minus the movie-like soundtrack and explosive set-pieces. Distancing itself from the large bulk of console shooters proves to be quite a gamble though. While Red River’s slow pace, and the ability of its enemies to pin-point your location with little effort, provides challenge and plenty of entertainment with a few friends, others are going to be less-forgiving of its shortcomings. Overall, aside from enjoying the storyline, we were bored to tears playing the game solo, but have had a fair few laughs playing co-operatively. Nonetheless, it still feels that Operation Flashpoint: Red River needed some more time in development in order to leave a lasting impression.
