Speed demon
The three tiered power-up system works extremely well because you really have to think about when you want to unleash destruction, timing it to perfection. The longer you leave it the more the meter powers up. If you trigger it as soon as you can you'll make a car explode in front of you, but if you bide your time you'll create some explosions that wouldn't look out of place in a Hollywood movie. The game engine copes extremely well considering there's so much going on on-screen and we were pleasantly surprised that we suffered no lag. Whether that smoothness will crossover into the online arena, which caters for up to eight players in a race, is going to be interesting to see, but if it does there's going to be some enjoyably aggressive battles to look forward to.Split/Second Velocity is a lot of fun, more fun than we actually expected. In terms of speed it doesn't quite have the same pace as the BurnOut series, but it makes up for that in terms of explosions and the sheer scale of them, plus a smooth control system which makes it instantly accessible. Due to the unpredictibilty of each race and the three tiered powerplay system it has that addictive kart racer feel to it where you'll just want to have one more go to try and outwit your opponent. It's fun, frantic, and it looks great. Go play it.
