Conclusion and Awards

So is Chili Con Carnage worth the cash? Most certainly and I’d recommend it to anyone who likes shooters on the PSP. Chili Con Carnage really is the most fun you can have on the Tube without resorting to speaking in a Mexican accent and selling tickets to La Lotteera, Senor. That’s not to say it has a couple of niggles, which are worth mentioning now.

First up, there’s no strafe control, which can make targeting bad guys a bit tricky, especially if they’re hiding behind a doorway. You can get around this by giving it a slow motion dodge jump through the doorway but then you’re out of cover and sometimes subjected to a hail of incoming fire.

Also, although there’s a free-look view this is ungainly to use in the heat of fire fight, which often means some arse of a bad guy will rain grenades or rockets down on you from on high whilst you struggle to even figure out where he is. Fortunately you can collect Rewind icons which, if you die or in some way balls up, allow you to reverse time and zip back 20 seconds or so as well as giving your health a bit of a top up, which is very handy.

So there you go, Chili Con Carnage is a game that’s chock full of humour and action with a fair whack of replayability as well as some rather cool multiplayer modes. For sure it might not take you all that long to work your way through the single player campaign but the sheer variety of style moves and fun to be had will get you going back for more. The missions are arranged in nice, bite-sized chunks which are ideal for a quick bash or, because of the great storyline, perfect for longer session. Even those who find shooters a bit tedious will find Chili Con Carnage well worth the investment. Oh, and Aye Caramba, amigos!

Pros
Easy controls
Simple auto targeting
Massive amount of variety in the combo-moves
Great humour
Out and fun by the sombrero load

Cons
Lack of strafing can leave you open to damage
Some later levels pretty tough
Field of view can be restrictive in targeting tough enemies

It’s John Woo meets Desperado with a strong touch of National Lampoon
