What don't we like?
Considering the Phantasy Star series is well known for its excellent online component it's disappointing that it's not been included here. Generally, the graphics are also quite sloppy and presentation is lack-lustre with the storyline told via reams of text and the voices of a series of lifeless, inanimate characters. There's a lot of menus full of stats to wade through and if you're unfamiliar with the Phantasy Star Universe it can all get very confusing.

There's also little to sustain your interest beyond fighting beasts and collecting loot so gameplay can feel very repetitive. Exploration is also virtually non-existent due to the 2D map that allows you to warp directly between arenas rather than make your own way there.

Final Thoughts
Gamers are going to fall into one of two categories when it comes to Phantasy Star Portable; those who love it and those that hate it. If you're a fan of the genre you'll have fun searching for loot and experimenting with the range of weapons and classes, but thanks to some poor presentation and repetitive gameplay, others will find it a real turn-off.

VERDICT - 7/10
