Opening up a can o' worms

So Worms firmly established itself as a worthy game franchise when it was a 2D, side-on battlefest, but did it ever comfortably make the move to 3D? Well, no, not really. In the same fashion that makes an updated 3D Pac-Man not feel like Pac-Man anymore, moving Worms to 3 dimensions took away that indefinable ‘something’ that made Worms so cool. This was underlined by the frankly poor Worms Forts Under Siege, and it seemed to be that the Worms had run their course and were destined to be another of those games that were great once and now just disappointing with each new version.

Well I’m happy to report that Worms 4: Mayhem addresses a lot of the problems that we saw in Forts and marks a return to form for the series. The humour that was a key element of the Worms games is here in spades. From the options to create your own teams and dress them as you see fit through to the outrageous voices you can assign to your custom created team, it’s all here. Staring with your basic worm you can outfit them in a variety of hats, hairstyles, glasses, goggles and gloves, all based on complete stereotypical cartoon fun. Once that’s done, give them one of the wide variety of comedy stereotypical voices, from scouser to cowboy, scots to disco macho-man. Sure, your whole team will look the same, but that’s fine, it’s a team uniform anyway.
