Missions, units

In addition to controlling the movement of units you can also control the behaviour of a single unit or the whole group by clicking or double clicking on them. This brings up a range of options that changes their behaviour towards enemies, such as holding position or attacking on site.

Managing all of your created units is made easy by the use of the ‘Army Controller’ that appears on the left hand side of the screen. Divided into 5 different sections each unit has a portrait so they are easily identifiable and a health bar and you can gain quick access to any unit by clicking on their icon in this section. Units can be moved up levels, thus giving them access to greater powers, by collecting a set amount of skulls.

Skulls are gained through combat and the tougher the opponent the more skulls you’ll obtain. Levelling up units is extremely handy in battle, for example, if you see that one of your warriors is almost dead and you have already collected the required amount of skulls, you can level him up and he will start the new level with maximum health. Skulls are also used as a resource and are needed, amongst other things, to create new heroes.

The campaign missions are varied and although many of them revolve around destroying an enemies main base there are numerous strategies that can be used to tackle them. For example, in one of the earlier missions you can create a harbour which can be used to build transport ships. The enemy base is situated at the far north of the land and the main entrance is guarded heavily. We built two transport ships, each holding ten units, and sent 20 of our strongest comrades to attack the base from their Northern gate. Meanwhile we sent 10 archers on foot to their Southern gate to create a distraction. As the archers attacked the main gate we disembarked our troops from the transport ships and took them by surprise at the North gate. Each mission becomes increasingly difficult with more bases to attack, an increased amount of tougher enemies to fight and the fear of constant attack on your own base. As we progressed deeper into the missions we had to think carefully about every move and just when we thought we had our tactics nailed, we would find ourselves retreating back to our main camp as we’d left it unmanned or the enemy were far too strong for us to take down.
