Quake 4

It took some time but we finally convinced Nick Haywood this wasn’t a Richter Scale measurement… beating it into him with a brick would’ve been quicker

This is the game that surely needs no introduction, yes? Alright, alright, I’ll give you a very brief and, most likely, flame-inducing run down of the game developer’s history. Ready? id Software they did Wolfenstein then the Doom games then Quake, some more Doom and now a bit more Quake. Raven Software did a Heretic and a Hexen game, a Jedi Knight and a Soldier of Fortune game too, usually the sequels or expansion packs. Got it? Let’s move on then…

Ok, time for a bit of history for Quake 4 itself and then we can get on with playing the game. Here we go. Quake was warmly welcomed by gamers though it was later to become known as Brown Quake owing to a colour pallet inspired by looking at a muddy puddle. Quake 2 was the first game to throw in a decent storyline along with excellent multiplayer maps though there were fewer chances to explore in the SP mode. Known as Brown and Grey Quake, Quake 2 is still widely regarded as the best Quake out there, even after Quake 3: Arena was released. Quake 3 Arena was Quake foray into purely multiplayer gaming and was looking to steal some of Unreal Tournament’s huge success. The two opposing games polarised the gaming community… Quake 3 Arena was also known a Twitch Quake due to the stupidly fast reactions you needed to be anything more than guts dribbling down a wall. Ok, can we please get on with the review now? Thanks.
