This more traditional style of mouse mat is much more like what we already know. It’s a semi-flexible mat made up of a smooth top surface glued to a soft, non-slip underside. The Func Industries F-Series Competition Mousing Surface comes in two varieties, the F10.s and the F30.r which, according to the spiel on the box, is a measure of the Ra parameter which is how rough something is, measured by a special algorithm… whoo!
Click for larger imageAlgorithms aside, the F10.s is the one we’ve got, which is the smoother version of the two. Despite being a flexible mat, the F10.s has a good weight to it, meaning there’s none of that ‘corner curling’ or warping that plagues most vinyl foam backed mats. The large size of the mat, coming in at 17” x 11” worked well in keeping the mat totally immobile on the table, even during a vigorous mouse shuffling session.
Click for larger imageA neat little additional extra with the F10.s is a mouse cord clip, designed to grab all the extra mouse cable you need and stop it snagging on sundry crud on your desk. To be perfectly honest, it’s just a cleverly shape bit of plastic that clips onto the edge of the F10.s which you then clip your mouse cable into. The advantage of this is that you won’t find yourself dragging extra cable up from behind the desk for more extreme mouse movements but with today’s high resolution mice you have to ask yourself just why you’d want all that extra cable anyway… and then you’d have to ask why you’d want such a huge mouse mat too.
Click for larger imageFor those of us to whom desktop space is at a premium, a large mouse mat like the F10.s is not the most practical of mats and you could well find that a smaller mat with a newer, higher DPI mouse will work better for you anyway. Still, there are those that like to roam all over the desk with their mouse when they knock the DPI down for accuracy over speed, so the F10.s might be worth a look though the surface is more suited to optical than ball driven mice.
The F10.s is ideal for those with loads of space and that cable tidy comes in very handy
