Microphone product doesn't meet Skype spec
Sony’s plans to bring Skype functionality to the PSP, a service that was due to launch tomorrow, has been postponed for the foreseeable future. The company were hyped about the fact that the VoIP service would allow PSP users to "Call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances”, but it's been revealed that Sony’s microphone product does not meet Skype’s specifications. Surely Sony would have known this before the big announcement a few weeks ago? It sounds like poor planning to us.
A statement on the Japanese Sony website reads: "Sony Computer Entertainment Japan ... announced that it would postpone the release of two microphone products for PSP, SINGLE PACK (with one microphone, PSPJ-15010) and TWIN PACK (with two microphones, PSPJ-15011), scheduled to be released in Japan on Thursday, January 24th, 2008."
The microphone products were due to be shipped alongside a PSP update to enable Skype on the handheld. Sony are seeking a solution to the problem, although a rescheduled release date for the service has yet to be confirmed.
