Forget Killzone2, LittleBigPlanet is where it's at...

Personally, I would have had all my money on Metal Gear Solid 4 being the most popular title on the PS3 in 2008, but Sony believe that the community-based game ‘LittleBigPlanet’ has the potential to take that accolade.

At a London event this week, Sony's senior product manager Nick Robinson enthused about the game, saying that the title is difficult to "sum up in a press release. And in some respects you can't sum it up in trailers. LittleBigPlanet is potentially our biggest Blu-ray release of 2008. We definitely see it as a triple-A Blu-ray release and will be a full price product," he told Videogamer.com

LittleBigPlanet is a very interesting premise and providing it can grasp the community’s attention right from the outset, it could grow from strength to strength.

The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character’s powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings – the first step to sharing them with the whole community.

Characters have the power to move anything in this glued and stitched-together 3D landscape; they have the power to design, shape and build both objects and entire locations for others to view and play. There’s no complicated level editor; all of these skills can be learned by simply playing the game. Creativity is part of the gameplay experience and playing is part of the creative experience. Players can make their world as open or as secretive to explore as they like. When it’s ready, they can invite anyone within the LittleBigPlanet community to come and explore their patch – or can go and explore everybody else’s.

Robinson has also said that there’s unlikely to be a demo of the title, but instead PS3 gamers will be invited to an open beta sometime in the near future.

Can this community-based title really see off the likes of MGS3, Resistance Fall of Man 2 and Killzone 2 in 2008?

Gonna be a big flop imo…..it seems like too much work building all these levels for other people to play them. I dont think quirky chracters and a cool environment will be enough.

Definitely hit or miss. I hope this works though, it's a nice idea.
i think it will work well, at the end of the day look at all the people that make sims furniture for other people to use or cod maps for other people to play. This is just about the only game that makes me interested in the ps3 at the moment.

The demos of it have looked really cool.
It depends if the PS3 environment has enough of the non hardcore gamers tho does it not?. I mean don't get me wrong i think its probably very cool idea, but maybe if it was on the Wii you'd have a more appropriate audience?…..

Very good point. You think this is enough to attract the casual gamer into picking up a PS3?
