Into the fray!

Games Convention 2007 Cresting the brow of a hill, I could see a small Korean checkpoint next to the shore with some kind of generator set up next to a hut. There were a few soldiers knocking about and jeep parked up on the road. Switching the nano-suit to stealth (easily done with a button press) I made my way down the rocky hill trying desperately not to pause and admire the detail in the textures on the boulders I was passing. I even remember to avoid brushing against the plant life as even though I was stealthed, vegetation moving about on its own isn’t a common occurrence and the Koreans would’ve known something was up.

Actually, whilst I think of it, the stealth doesn’t render you completely invisible, it’s similar to the cloaking system in the Predator films. You become really hard to see but if you knock into something or open fire you’ll draw attention to yourself. Also, as with all the nano-suit’s functions, they only have a limited length of use as they deplete the suit’s internal power. Sure, it recharges but you need to keep an eye on the power meter as there’s nothing worse than losing suit power halfway across a mad dash over open space.

So I made it to the hut without any problems but now I needed to deal with the Koreans. I was told to try out a mix of suit powers starting off with speed to close the gap quickly on a patrolling guard and then to switch to strength to grab him and hurl him away, hopefully killing him. As it was I ballsed it up. I got the speed bit right and even switched to strength whilst on the run but then I threw him to the ground rather than into the air… so apart from a light bruising and mud on his uniform he was fine and now very, very pissed off. I guess one satisfying thing from my botched attempt was the shocked, horrified face of the poor guy as I grabbed him around the throat.

Anyway, he survived his tumble and raised the alarm and there was me now under fire from both sides… marvellous. My guide for the session told me to switch to strength and leap onto the roof of the hut, so a quick strafe back across the road and a leap onto the hut saw me taking a bit of cover from the nearer soldiers… who then legged it back across the road to take cover behind the damn jeep and resume firing on me.

So I thoughtfully switched to armour mode and then stitched the jeep with a full clip and through luck rather than judgement I managed to nick the jerry can of fuel on the back of the jeep, which started flaming nicely. Suddenly, the Koreans realised they were taking cover behind a time-bomb and the both fled, one each direction… moments before the jeep blew in a seriously impressive spray of truck parts, flames and smoke. Cool.
