The news

Latest Windows PC TV tuner from Hauppauge isn't the USB diversity model we've talked about but, instead, a PCI card with a diverse reception range. The company describes the £100 WinTV HVR-3000 as "Tri-mode" but, in fact, it picks up Freeview digital terrestrial, analogue terrestrial (or cable), free-to-air satellite (such as transmitted via Astra and Eutelsat) and FM radio.

Better still, the card has inputs for S-video, composite video and L/R audio, for recording from external video sources - VCRs, camcorders, whatever - in a choice of three formats, MPEG-1 SVCD; MPEG-2 SVCD; MPEG-2 DVD.

An IR remote handset is supplied, along with Hauppauge's seven-day programmme-guide for Freeview and its SoftPVR program for timer, manual and external recordings.

The card is said to be "Windows-Vista-ready" and compatible with Windows XP SP2. In each case, the prime system requirement is a 1.5GHz or faster processor - 3.0GHz needed for analogue TV recording to MPEG-2 - and a free PCI slot.
