PRESS RELEASE
Security experts worry that DNSChanger woes are not yet over
London, UK, 1st March 2012 - On March 8th 2012 the FBI will bring down the illegal servers used by cyber criminals. Malware, distributed by the criminals, caused a rerouting in the system of its unsuspecting victims. After this rerouting, the infected systems were directed to the criminal servers to establish an Internet connection, rather than to the normal, safe server that was used previously. Many security experts worry that there are still many computers, unbeknownst to users and businesses, that are connected to the Internet via these illegal servers, and that millions of people worldwide will be disconnected when the servers are shut down. Although the FBI decided to keep the criminal servers in the air for a few months togive users the chance to undo the rerouting of their connection, many are still connected via the insecure servers.
Fortunately it is possible to undo the rerouting. To find out if your PC uses the criminal servers, you can check by visiting http://www.dnschanger.eu/. There is a short test which gives a result immediately. If it appears that the PC actually uses the illegal servers, users can follow a few steps that G Data published specifically for this purpose. The instructions can be downloaded from http://www.gdata.de/fileadmin/dam_files/mediasync/Dokumente/SecurityLab/G_Data_SecLabs_Info_DNSChanger_EN.pdf
Eddy Willems, Security Evangelist at G Data, comments: "The malware this criminal gang used for infection is identified and removed by most antivirus solutions. But this does not mean the rerouting of the system hasbeen undone. So it is possible to have a clean system that accesses the Internet through these criminal servers. As a user you don't notice it, but on March 8th many users will, when their systems suddenly lose connection to the Internet. Of course users can follow the suggested steps at that time, but then you must have already downloaded the instruction booklet, as without an Internet connection, it is difficult to gain the information. Therefore, users should take preventative measures rather than having to patch things up afterwards."
