A month ago we were showing you Woodcrest ready servers and now Woodcrest is here to drop into them.
The Core based Woodcrest CPUs have been given the Xeon 5100 series title, picking up where the 5000 series Dempseys left off. As we've already seen with laptops, Intel is pushing Core for servers as providing "performance, power efficiency and value".
System Integrator and manufacturer support is good too. Intel say some 200 server and workstation models based around the new Woodcrest chips are already planned, coming from 150 manufacturers.
Woodcrest fits into Intel's 'Bensley Platform', which includes FB-DIMM memory, virtualization, server management and I/O acceleration. Intel are looking to push FB-DIMMs to speed up their adoption.
The 5100 series Xeons have a TDP of 65 watts, excluding the fastest - the 3.0GHz model has a TDP that's a little higher, at 80 watts. The chips have a 1333MHz FSB and 4MiB of L2 cache shared between two cores.
The chips will get more efficient still come the third quarter, when Intel says a 40 watt version will surface, clocked at 2.33GHz.
Right, we've got Core in our servers, Core in our laptops... now where's Conroe? :)
