Stupendous shipments

Worldwide PC shipments have rebounded from 2009 levels with a third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth rates as Asus and Lenovo reap the richest rewards.

Results from the International Data Group (IDC) and Gartner both revealed a healthy growth in PC shipments, mostly buoyed by the consumer mobile market.

According to research firm Gartner's preliminary results, worldwide PC shipments have risen by 20.7 percent in the second quarter of 2010 from Q2 2009 levels, with shipments reaching 82.9m units. Better still the growth rate has exceeded Gartner's expectations of 19.3 percent growth.

While the IDC's growth rate is broadly in-line with Gartner's at 22.4%, it was slightly below its initial expectations of 22.9% market growth for Q2 2010.

"The preliminary second quarter results indicate ongoing improvement of the PC market and it marks the third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth on a year-over-year basis," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.

Jay Chou, research analyst with IDC said: "The PC market remains robust and in a recovery phase, despite challenges to a broader economic recovery, such as slow job growth and a more conservative outlook in Europe and Asia/Pacific. The factors which led to the recent PC rebound - an aging commercial installed base, a proliferation of low-cost media-centric PCs, and low PC penetration through much of the world - remain key drivers going forward."

The most successful vendors were Lenovo and Asus.  Lenovo's shipments soared by 47.2 percent in Q2 2010 after price slashing in Asia/Pacific ex Japan as well as making rapid gains in North America and Europe.  According to the IDC, Laptop growth was a major driver plus desktop deals in emerging markets and business renewals.

Asus boasted the strongest growth rate in Q2 as shipments rocketed by between 78.5 percent and 80 percent according to the reports.  Gartner cited its focus on mini laptops, while the IDC said distribution network expansion accounted for its success.
