Virgin Media and Universal have added another layer to their media distribution relationship with the launch of the PictureBox movie-on-demand service on the Virgin TV platform.

Two weeks ago the companies unveiled an unlimited, DRM-free music download subscription service and this offering is using the subscription model too - five pounds per month on top of existing fees.

PictureBox is by no means exclusive to Virgin, however, as it's already available through BT Vision, Tiscali (Carphone Warehouse) and Top Up TV in the UK. However it is owned by NBC Universal, and so marks a further development in the relationship between the two companies. Virgin is also the first UK platform to offer the movies in HD.

"This agreement is a significant step in the growth of the PictureBox brand, which will now be available to Virgin Media's 3.6 million TV customers in the UK," said Belinda Menendez, president, NBC Universal International TV Distribution. "Our reach in the UK has now increased more than fivefold and the service has expanded internationally since initial launch less than three years ago."
