Good intentions

Here are some examples of open source action already happening in the public sector, according to the press release:

50 per cent of main departmental websites use Apache as their core web server; the NHS spine use an open-sourced operating system; 35 per cent of NHS organisations covering almost 300,000 users, will soon be supported on Linux infrastructure; open source components are used in major systems such as Directgov and electronic vehicle licensing.

This levelling of the playing field (surely flattening of the greens? - Ed) in favour of open source could provide new opportunities for the reseller channel but is unlikely to be well received by large software vendors and consulting organisations.

The usual interminable policy document can be endured here. On first inspection it appears to be comprised of the usual good intentions, proposals for new layers of bureaucracy and, of course, the promise of further reviews.

Sounds nice, but could just be a way to get commecial software companies to lower their prices, not that I'm cynical, of course.
Its about :censored: time.

Just waiting for them to drop office now…. (I know fat chance of that).
