Amid no fanfare whatsoever that we're aware of, AMD has launched the ATI FirePro 2450 Multi-View workstation graphics accelerator.

In addition to there being very few PR people left at AMD, a probable reason for this reticence is that the card is aimed exclusively at the professional space. However, given that ATI is currently gaining market share from NVIDIA in the professional space, it might be an idea to strike while the iron is hot.

Anyway, the big deal about this card, according to AMD, is its energy efficiency - it's designed to operate at under 18 watts. It's also relatively small.

"The ATI FirePro 2450 offers the reliability professionals expect and the efficiency IT departments require. IT managers want a card they can test once, deploy virtually anywhere, and count on to run reliably," said Janet Matsuda, senior director at AMD Professional Graphics.

"The low power consumption enables cool, energy-efficient operation, as well as superior reliability and longevity. The compact form factor can be deployed in nearly any system. This accelerator is perfect for customers who need more than two displays, such as in financial services and process control."
