Lots of launches

HP bravely hosted an event called “Connecting your world” just hours after Apple’s obsessively followed WWDC event. Unlike Apple, however, HP launched a whole bunch of products. Like Apple, it appears to be focussing on design and coolness – good idea.

“Making the computer ‘Personal Again’ is our commitment to customers and the driving force behind our customer-experience decisions,” said Todd Bradley, executive VP of the Personal Systems Group at HP.

“From design elements that make a personal statement and an intuitive touch interface that delivers real innovation, to the breakthrough display of 1 billion colors, we’re working to show a broad and global set of industry segments what our hardware and software engineering capabilities and scale can do for them.”

In normal language, that means HP has put an emphasis on design and has launched a new touch screen system and display. Here’s a breakdown of the key launches.

TouchSmart

These all-in-one PCs are based on a touch screen interface and are designed for entertainment use in the home. There is special HP software installed to create a gesture driven GUI along the lines of the iPhone or Microsoft’s Multi-touch.

The HP TouchSmart IQ504 PC and the TV-tuner equipped IQ506 PC are expected to start at $1,299 and $1499, respectively.

DreamColor

The DreamColor display is new “color-critical” professional display, designed in conjunction with DreamWorks Animation. It has over 64 times the number of colours than a mainstream LCD

The big deal seems to be that it costs less than a quarter of other, equivalent products, but that’s still $3,499.
