Keep inventing things

Smartphone users have already come to expect a full internet experience - including TV clips - on their devices, but watching entire TV programmes on them is another matter entirely.

The issue, as ever with mobile connectivity, is bandwidth. With all the other demands on mobile phone networks, it's just not practical to enable the streaming of extended video content on them, so an alternative is required.

This is why 3G technology company Qualcomm has created FLO TV - a technology designed specifically to broadcast video content to mobile devices.

HEXUS.channel spoke exclusively to Chem Assayag (pictured), EMEA head of business development for FLO Technologies - the division of Qualcomm dedicated to this technology - and asked him why Qualcomm has decided to get involved in this sort of thing.

"Our engineers keep inventing things," said Assayag. "Broadcast allows you to deliver content to many consumers more efficiently than using cellular networks. Traditional DVB-T technology is not designed for mobility as it ideally requires a roof-top antenna, so you need a special technology."
