The most remarkable figure to come from IDC's preliminary results for the EMEA PC market in Q1 is a year on year increase in UK unit shipments of 230 percent by Samsung.

"Samsung is very strong; it has overtaken Dell in Germany and is now the 5th largest in the UK," said IDC research manager Ezster Morvay, speaking exclusively to HEXUS.channel. "A year ago Samsung was barely in the UK, but deals with DSGi and some telcos have been big factors."

Samsung took market share from everyone except Acer and Toshiba in the UK. The table below shows year on year change in market share in the UK by vendor.

Top 10 UK PC vendors

HP -7.9%
Dell -22.2%
Acer 17.5%
Toshiba 7.7%
Apple -13.3%
Samsung 230.3%
Lenovo -18.5%
Fujitsu Siemens -50.4%
Sony -18.3%
ASUS -14.3%

Notable fallers included Dell and Fujitsu Siemens. "Dell declined in the UK as HP has taken share away from it in the commercial space," said Morvay. "Dell is being punished for its heavy reliance on the corporate market. We speculate that FSC will leave the consumer market and slowly withdraw from the hardware market altogether because it's just not profitable for them."
