Benchmarks II

Next up is DVD encoding using a quality-driven approach. Three Kings is the DVD of choice, resized to 720x304, precise bilinear and black borders cropped. YUV2 spacing is used and the bit rate is set to 1700 kbps with 2-pass encoding enabled. I encode a 15-minute section and calculate the average fps from there. DivX 4.12 is still my CODEC of choice.

The lack of bandwidth, in one of the most memory intensive applications, is evident here again.

I've always wondered just how good the IDE controllers were on the newer SiS motherboards. I ran HDTach on my WD 120GB drive to check for any anomalies in disk performance. Here is the result.

Apart from the minor blip in the middle, this is as smooth a graph as I've ever seen from this particular drive. Comfortably smoother than when used in an Intel motherboard. The only slight cause for concern is the rather high seek-time. Still, the PC felt extremely smooth within Windows.

Let's now throw a few gaming benchmarks into the mix.
