Gaming at 2,560x1,600

We benchmarked the two machines at a 30in monitor's native 2,560x1,600 resolution, and one will need at least this kind of screen to put the onus on the powerful graphics subsystems.

We're essentially comparing two GeForce GTX 480s in SLI against two Radeon HD 5870s in CrossFireX.  The GeForce GTX 480s hold a reasonable lead here, but neither machine's minimum frame-rate drops below 60fps during the benchmarked sequence.

The tables are turned, just, in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, as the Radeons sneak ahead. Both machines deliver smooth performance at the 2,560x1,600 setting.

Perhaps the most popular game at the moment, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 is a DX9 console port that runs very well on mid-range hardware. Doubling up with two very high-end cards leads to over-the-top performance: the Scan system's minimum frame-rate is 128fps.
