Cranking up the load, CrystalDiskMark's 4K benchmark uses a queue depth of 32 to repeatedly transfer very small uncompressible files.

The results provide an early answer to our initial question; can minor tweaks make all the difference? Though read speeds are almost identical, specialised firmware puts the OCZ Vertex 2 ahead in the 4K write benchmark. Patriot's Inferno is quick, but not as quick as competing SandForce solutions.
