Wireless Performance

Synology's hardware specification suggests that the RT1900ac isn't designed to set the benchmarks alight, but rather to hold the router in good stead when compared to modern alternatives. At Location A - the room directly above the router - the Synology device delivers solid results on both bands and performance is in line with expectations.

Location B - across the ground floor at a distance of roughly 45ft - is more tricky. The RT1900ac's 2.4GHz band copes reasonably well, however the 5GHz band struggles at this range and upstream performance drops off significantly compared to TP-Link's similarly-priced Archer VR900.

Location C, on the top floor, delivers a much healthier wireless connection. The Synology performs admirably on the 2.4GHz band and speeds are respectable via 5GHz. Why do all routers deliver a performance level that pales in comparison to what's written on the box? Well, that's the difference between best-case and real-world, and with our increasingly congested airwaves, high-end routers don't guarantee a fast, stable connection.
