Benchmarks: System and Gaming
PCMark's Home benchmark seems to prefer the 4.0GHz peak CPU frequency of last year's model, but 3DMark sets the GT80 and GT80S apart. The latter's employment of dual GTX 980 GPUs delivers a whopping 16,067 marks. Hands up, who has a desktop that can beat that?
The catch, we suppose, is that the amount of GPU horsepower is wasted on the native 1080p display. At this resolution, GT80S has no trouble churning out modern games at 100 frames per second or higher.
A higher-resolution display is needed to make the best use of the available hardware, so we've attached a 4K Philips monitor to see how the dual GTX 980 setup fares. The answer is pretty damn well. Gaming at 2,560x1,440 is silky-smooth, and that trend continues at a lofty 3,840x2,160, with Total War: Rome II being the only title to fall below 60fps.
Given the in-game results, it's a shame GT80S doesn't feature a QHD display or G-Sync integration as standard. That would be a killer combination.
