Ports, lots of yummy ports
PC Card connectivity too
Like most of todays laptops this one comes fully armed and loaded, ready to connect to most of the peripherals out there. A single Firewire 400 port capable of 400Mbps (50MBps) is the high speed data port of the powerbook, which lacks USB2 support. Given that the hard drive has a maximum burst-rate of 66MBps a Firewire 800 port would not be possible, due to the data rate of the hard drive (and this is why Firewire 800 is available on the ATA/100 17-inch model). I plugged my brand new iPod 15Gig (rev2) and it took 45s to upload a 735MB file, and 47s to upload a folder holding files worth 604MB. Uploading 4 files totalling 2918MB took 185s. On average this works out to 15MBps, which is acceptable.
This laptop also comes DVI ready, which is used to connect external LCD screens. With the included DVI-to-VGA adaptor a regular CRT monitor can be connected. The S-Video out means that the display could be mirrored on a monitor or even sent to a video recorder or projector. USB (1.1): This simply works at 12Mbps and is the current connection standard that is universally supported. A special addition is Gigabit Ethernet, which performs at 1000Mbps (125MBps) and these speeds are ideally targeted at the corporate user, as even the cabling for 1000BaseT is different (Cat5e).
Weight and Paint
This is a slightly lighter laptop than most models, only weighing 2.4Kg. It has a very sturdy housing, that has an all titanium body. The old models suffered from a 'paint' chipping issue,
that has finally been rectified. Due to the all Titanium body, the immediate heating of the body is less,
and this allows comfortable arm resting while using the trackpad and keyboard.
There is an internal fan that comes on when the internal temperature reaches a certain level, which causes the
heat to be vented out the rear and side vents.
Home Theatre Mogul?
Definitely! The
3:2 aspect ratio that the screen supports, and the audio line-out allow amazing
hours of fun, in the car, home, or even at 39,000ft above sea level. The system comes with its own DVD player which auto runs when any DVD is inserted, and navigating the DVD as easy
as using your TV remote.
