As expected, Lenovo's 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo-powered T400s towers above the Intel CULV-based competitors in our CPU-intensive benchmarks.

The results are very much in line with all-round system responsiveness, which we found to be generally superb. The combination of a quick CPU, ample amounts of DDR3 memory and a solid-state drive result in snappy performance and quick-loading applications. Highlighting performance, we were able to clean install Windows 7 in just under 22 minutes. Booting into the operating system takes approximately 50 seconds, whilst a complete shut down occurs in a fraction under 10 seconds.

In use, the system excels at everyday tasks - there's plenty of power for your Office suite and email, and more challenging tasks - playback of 1080p movie clips for example - aren't a problem. We found CPU usage remained comfortably below the 10 per cent mark whilst playing back a 1080p Quicktime movie trailer in Windows Media Player.
