The two comparison laptops feature Intel's CULV platform which is designed for low-power usage. The mainstream range uses full-fat Core 2 chips, which are ostensibly the same but often clocked in at higher speeds.

Even so, the 2.1GHz-clocked Athlon II does a reasonable job in our number-crunching test, helped by the Phenom architecture. Anything under 60 seconds can be considered 'good' for a laptop.

Multi-threaded CPU benchmark performance is also good for a sub-£500 laptop.

Unlike the bevy of low-powered Atom chips, AMD's mainstream 45nm parts have enough grunt for HD playback, helped by the Radeon HD 4200 IGP.

DVD playback is smooth and full of detail. Subjectively, it's a little better than Timeline's.
