Some of the biggest advancements in modern laptops revolve around the capabilities of the display panel. To provide a more meaningful overview of panel characteristics, we're deploying Datacolor's Spyder 4 Elite professional monitor analyser to return a quantitative assessment of display quality.

A laptop as powerful and well equipped as the GT72VR could double as a very effective mobile workstation, so how good is the display for multimedia types? The initial signs are good, as the TN panel covers 100 per cent of the sRGB space and 89 per cent of of Adobe RGB. A solid start.

Being able to display a wide gamut of colours can be helpful, yet the colours themselves still need to deliver in terms of accuracy. In the above chart, the Delta-E figure corresponds to how close the displayed colours match up with real life and the lower the overall result, the better. Any figure below 2 is considered very good.

Here's where things start to go awry. MSI's out-the-box calibration, dubbed True Colour Technology, is a long way from accurate. The above results are taken using the 'designer' profile and switching to 'sRGB' didn't help a great deal, as colour accuracy remained at an unimpressive average of 9.08. It's immediately obvious that colours don't look right and calibration will be required to obtain a more natural image.

Brightness, black levels and contrast are all decent but not spectacular, yet the 17.3in TN display remains a mixed bag. On one hand viewing angles aren't the best and colour accuracy leaves a lot to be desired, but on the other hand the 1080p resolution and 120Hz G-Sync play perfectly well with a GTX 1070.
