Overclocking

Given time constraints, we overclocked using the usual method of increasing the core and memory whilst also increasing the Power Target figure. The Power Target is significantly lower than that of the full-fat card, whose limit ran up to 131 per cent.

A limitation on power doesn't get in the way of the overclock, mind. In a coincidental copy of the way the GTX 1080 overclocked, we added an extra 220MHz on the core. The memory, meanwhile, scaled up to 9GHz easily enough. The overclocked card was then tested on three benchmarks.

Another 10 per cent or so put the overclocked GTX 1070 into the performance ballpark currently occupied by partner-overclocked GeForce GTX 980 Ti GPUs. There's no reasonable way in which this GPU can make up the shortfall incurred by a sizeable reduction in shaders and bandwidth when compared to a vanilla GTX 1080. This is effective segmentation.
