Far Cry

Far Cry is tested using the default SFR mode and with a couple of the HDR modes in the engine activated for good measure.

Far Cry NoHDR

Without HDR activated, both 6800 GT and 6800 Ultra in SLI mode offer substantial performance improvements, pushing up against an obvious CPU limitation. We saw in the first article that activating HDR wasn't a performance win for SLI at all. Let's see how the GTs fare.

You get a minor increase from SLI on both systems, but it's barely anything. Two GTs in our CPU-limited Far Cry test aren't a match for a single Ultra. It's a test that highlights how application programming, CPU limitation and resource usage can conspire to cancel out any potential SLI performance benefit.

It's obvious that the extra expenditure for SLI isn't buying you anything in Far Cry, especially with HDR lighting enabled. Which leads me on nicely to the question of just what SLI buys you for your money.
