3DMark

3DMark is the latest version of this hugely-popular synthetic benchmark. Making use of DX11 features such as tessellation, compute shaders and multi-threading, it provides modern-day results and is available as a free download.

We've chosen a Ā£250-ish ceiling for the various cards in our line-up. This card won't beat an AMD Fury or GTX 980 Ti so it's important to show the upgrade path over cheaper add-in boards.

The GTX 970 and R9 390 are a good match in 3DMark, and any score over 10,000 hints to very good real-world performance at 1080p.

And more than 5,000 marks at 1440p is another good sign. Note that a GTX 970 is a little faster, and such knowledge is important when you consider that AMD usually has the upper hand in this benchmark.
