Review: EVGA GTX 970 SSC in SLI vs. Titan X and R9 295X2

One of the most terrifying games of recent years, Alien: Isolation is a must for fans of the series and on PC hardware it looks as good as it plays. To gauge performance, we benchmark a 45-second stint of the game at FHD, QHD and 4K UHD resolutions.

Titan X has no answer to the dual-card GTX 970 setup, which, remember, is available for about £560, or £300 less than the new beastie from Nvidia. It would take a heavily overclocked Titan X to outdo the GTX 970 SLI combo.

Looking at average and minimum framerates doesn't always tell the full story. You ideally want the slowest one per cent of frames - those that are readily perceivable - to be as fast as possible. Titan X has a lower average framerate at 4K but its slowest one per cent of frames are, well, not as slow as the GTX 970 SLI's.

Can we look at this in another way? You want the 99th percentile frame to be as close to the average as possible, intimating relatively smooth gameplay. Titan X's 99th percentile equates to 53.8fps over a full second, which is reasonably close to the 68fps in the graph. GTX 970 SSC SLI, meanwhile, averages 84fps but the worst one per cent of frames come in at 43.5fps.

Ignoring budget for a moment and asked to choose between any setup for this particular game we'd go for Titan X, even though its average framerate is lower.
