In raw DX8 performance, R420 performance scales over that of the NV40 by virtue of its clock speed, almost exactly linearly, highlighting the similarities in each architecture. The high performance AA modes help it demolish both NV40 and R360 at their respective maximum IQ settings at both 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
It's nearly exactly 2X as fast as R360, the architecture underlying how that performance is obtained.

X800 XT is anywhere from 2X to 2.5X as fast as 9800XT in 3DMark03, maintaining performance parity with NV40 until the NVIDIA GPU's 8X AA mode conspires to suck its performance away. ATI's 6X AA shines yet again.
