Racing games can offer dazzling visuals when delivered at buttery-smooth framerates. Grid Autosport is a prime example and is benchmarked with maximum quality settings plus 8xMSAA at 1080p and 2xMSAA at 4K.

Some games do respond to core clock better than others. In keeping with the specifications, the GTX 980 Strix is comfortably quicker than reference and slots in just behind the Gigabyte card.

Racing games look fantastic at 60 frames per second, and you do need a GeForce GTX 980 to make that happen at 4K. However, the price point of Nvidia's second-rung card does complicate matters: sure, the 970 Strix is 20 per cent slower than its 980 counterpart, but it's also a whopping 40 per cent cheaper.
